A fluffy red tabby rested in a plump woman's arms as she entered the vet's office. The tabby was asleep, nestled up against the fabric of her blue dress. The cat looked peaceful and happy, but something was off, otherwise the pair wouldn't be present. The woman seemed unsure of herself and worried as she slowly approached the counter, avoiding eye contact with whomever sat behind the counter. Instead, her eyes bounced from the animal to various other details about the building. As the feline stirred in her arms, she held the animal closer to her chest. The woman stopped at the desk and cleared her throat. "Um," she said quietly, still not making eye contact.

Liam, the man whose body was the vessel for the once-powerful god, Fenrir, returned from his smoke break smelling vaguely of weed, but he'd done a good job of changing his clothes so it would only be perceptible if one were right up in his business. He wore a weary set of circles under his eyes and pinched brows, but as soon as he walked to the front desk to see who the next patient was, he slapped on a friendly smile, even if it was extremely forced. Another day, another dollar, right? "Morning, ma'am. Have you signed in with the receptionist yet?" The receptionist in question was peering at her computer and tick-tacking away at the keyboard, semi-oblivious.
Stell12/05/2019
The woman saw Liam out of the corner of her eye and turned to him, blinking at his question. She shook her head and responded with a “no”, prompting her to go to receptionist, who welcomed her and asked her if she had been to this vet before. Another “no”. When asked what was wrong with her cat, the woman responded with “She will not eat.” The receptionist nodded and carefully placed a clipboard and pen with papers to be filled on the counter. “You can fill these out when you’re in with the vet,” the receptionist noted, nodding at Liam. The color in the woman’s face and the sight of the papers. It’d been so long since she had bothered to speak, read, or write English. How much did she remember? Her blue eyes wandered to Liam. He seemed familiar, but it couldn’t be. This was a different place.
Bananasaurus| Steve/Donaghan/etc12/07/2019
The reason for Liam's exhaustion salivated within his head. Anotherrr veak vone. Devourr them both! As always, he wanted to tell Fenrir to shut the Hel up, but doing so in front of his techs, other employees, and patients looked like he was out of his gourd. So, instead, he cleared his throat. "I'm Dr. Liam Mordre du Loup, but you can just call me Dr. Liam if that's too hard to remember. Once you get checked in, come on and meet me through that door there." He leaned slightly over the counter to point towards one of the 2 doors - the one that led to the patient room and not the hallway that lead further into the office. He nodded back at the receptionist and went the back way into the room. You rrrremember herrr, don't you...?
Stell12/07/2019
Stell listened to Liam and nods, glancing over to the doors when he pointed. She doesn’t remember the doctor, unfortunately. It’s been too long for her. She only remembered those she’s spent lots of time with... and a certain weredeer. Instead of staying to fill out the paperwork, she took her cat and the papers and clipboard through the door. Stell doesn’t remember a whole lot of the English alphabet. She would need help with it. The vet won’t be getting the paperwork today. Stell was too embarrassed to admit that she didn’t remember the alphabet. The woman went over to Liam, placing the paperwork down on the table in the room. “Hello. My cat will not eat,” she said in her thick accent.
Bananasaurus| Steve/Donaghan/etc12/09/2019
Her scent. Memories flooded back of the confusion he first felt when she first brought her cat to him back in San Angeles. She was neither human nor anything he could decipher. It was as if she wasn't even from the planet, or universe. Well, wait, technically neither did he, now did he? He came from the universe where FEAR and BITE waged war in the streets, and the Purge had nearly cost him his life. "It's good to see you again," he said, smiling somewhat genuinely this time. It was rather good to see someone whom he'd met in his own world, even if it was just a client. "Let's have a look. Can you put him on the table there for me?"
Stell12/09/2019
She remembered the purge. Weeks behind bars, hiding under a table in attempt to protect her identity while she slept. Stell preferred not to think about it, although it still kept her awake at night. Often. Him recognizing her confused the poor, nervous woman. She stared at him for a few moments before giving him an awkward smile. “Hello,” she said, gently placing the cat and unfilled paper work on the table. Gargulio awakened from her slumber and yawned, blinking at the vet. She meowed softly and padded to the edge of the table, purring at Liam. At least someone recognized him. “She knows you,” Stell commented.
Bananasaurus| Steve/Donaghan/etc12/11/2019
Liam's eyes the paperwork briefly, his smile flickering, before his gaze rose back to the woman. "Hello. One of my techs can help you fill that out, miss. What is your and his name again? It's been a long time." As the cat reacted to him, his smile broadened into a grin and he'd scratch him behind the ear if allowed. "You're one of very few cats that dont hate me. How could I forget you?" the vet cooed.
Stell12/12/2019
"I would like, yes. Her name is Gargulio. Some call her Gargoyle, though. Maybe easier to say. I am Stella," she replied. Gargulio continued to purr as Liam gave her attention. Stell reached out to pet the cat on the back. Gargulio's back arched into the woman's hand. "She does not eat for two days now. I am worried." Three years earlier, she'd left San Angeles and lost contact with her friends, leaving her no reason to use English. She had forgotten a good portion of what she learned.
Bananasaurus| Steve/Donaghan/etc12/19/2019
Oops, he'd gotten the gender of the cat wrong. So much for his memory. He'd have known if the cat showed her backside, but all he was getting was the front. "Her, I'm so sorry, her," he corrected himself. "Alright, miss erm, your name, please?" Once that was given, Gargulio was gently pulled so she was standing long-ways in front of him on the table. He wondered at why someone would call her Gargoyle. She seemed fair tempered... Anyway. "Well, it could be any manner of things, so let's not get worked up just yet." A gentle smile graced his features. "Has she been vomiting? How is her stool-- her poop?" Lovely questions, but needed.
Stell12/23/2019
Stell gave a small smile at the vet’s mistake. “I do not think she cares. I am Stella.” Gargulio meowed when she was moved and decided to sit on her hindquarters. She raised a paw to her muzzle and proceeded to lick said paw to rub her ears. Her head then head turned to stare at Liam with bright, golden eyes. She fixated on him, as if she could tell there was something about him. Another meow. “Her poop?” Stell asked, “it does not look different. Is it supposed to look different if she switches to rabbit from bird?” Rabbits were easier to catch than birds. Gargulio, being a cat, did not approve of easier. The cat’s figure and weight was fine, as she’d been hunting mice on her own, but her owner had no idea and only saw that she wasn’t eating.
Bananasaurus| Steve/Donaghan/etc12/24/2019
"Miss Stella," he said, flashing his teeth in what he hoped was a reassuring smile. The cat gazing up into him caught his attention and momentarily transfixed him. He stared back, his own (currently) black eyes depthless and brooding. As he stared, Fenrir stirred again in his mind. She is... differrrent frrrom the otherrr felines. "I know," whispered Liam, hopefully to himself. His own irises flashed yellow-gold for just a millisecond before he broke the eye contact and lifted his gaze back up to Gargulio's owner. "Ehem. That's good to hear. If there was some kind of intestinal damage or ulcer, there would be blood or bile in her poop. If there were a blockage, she'd not be pooping at all. That's good." The vet stroked the cat and surreptitiously palpated her belly. "That's... odd. She's full. Are you... sure she's not eating?" Brows pinched together with mild confusion. "I'm sorry, come again? From rabbit to bird? Is she an outdoor cat?"
Stell01/16/2020
Gargulio didn't care. As long as she wasn't being attacked, she tolerated other animals. The cat allowed the vet to pet her and her belly, then pulled away and sat elsewhere, staring at Liam. After watching Liam for a good few seconds, splayed out and... licked her butthole. Stell watched her cat, then looked back at Liam. "I catch food for her. Rabbit is easier. They are on the ground. She does go outside with me when I garden. She keeps mice away from my plants, wanders around by herself" Stell replied. Her cabin was technically 'outside'. Whatever the weather outside was, it was like that inside. A hole in the ceiling. "She ate the food I put out right away for her when she ate bird. Now, she turns her nose up at rabbit.
Bananasaurus| Steve/Donaghan/etc01/20/2020
Liam's lapse in control over Fenrir was pushed aside in his mind, and he hitched his hands on his hips as the cat cleaned herself.
"It sounds to me like she's catching food herself, then. Maybe those mice around your plants? Either way, being an outdoor cat living on a diet of wildlife isn't the best for her." He frowned pensively and met Stella's eyes.
"She's going to need plenty of vaccinations. And if you're still worried something might be wrong, we can always take an x-ray to be sure." He hated that he had to ask the next question: "So... how much can you afford to do, Miss Stella?"
Stell01/21/2020
"Oh," Stell said, still watching her cat. She glanced over at Liam, but looked away quickly upon seeing the frown. "I guess I did not ever think about what was best for her. Years ago, I find her in a dumpster in the city and she follows me since. I am glad she eats, though." Her eyes found the ground. Now, she felt bad. Then, the topic of money came up. She cringed. The only money she had was worthless on this planet. The woman remained silent for a solid minute. "I do not... have money," Stell responded.
Bananasaurus| Steve/Donaghan/etc03/01/2020
The good doc never wanted to make anyone feel bad, but he had to be the 'mean dad' for a lot of people that loved their pets but were nonetheless not doing right by them. "Oh? That's good to hear you gave her a home." His frown flickered into a smile, before it returned, this one less 'mean dad' and more 'concerned dad.'
"I... see." He wracked his brains for something, knowing that he couldn't very well afford to give free care out for every patient that didn't have the money. Then his dark eyes lit up. "Hey, we're hiring for a weekend and holiday caretaker for the cats and dogs that board with us while their owners are away. It's not a complex job, but it requires some training. You could do that to pay for Gargulio here."
Stell03/17/2020
Stell felt bad that she wasn't providing the best care for Gargulio. Perhaps she was not the best guardian for the animal. After hearing the criticism, it was something that went through her brain. No money, no cat food. She almost didn't hear Liam's offer. It took her a couple of moments after he spoke for Stell to process what Liam said. Her face lit up. "Yes, I would like to take care of animals. Do I bring Gargulio, too?" At this point, Stell thought that maybe Gargulio should stay at the vet's office? Maybe here would be a better home. "Do I leave her here? Do not have a good home for her." No, she wouldn't admit she lived in a run down shack in the woods. Stell bit her lip and closed her eyes. Earth wouldn't be the same without Gargulio. Stell lost contact with her friends years ago. The cat was all she had left.
Bananasaurus| Steve/Donaghan/etc03/24/2020
The doctor watched her with sympathy in his dark eyes, but Fenrir within him was growing restless. I'm hungrrry... Feed us soon or you'll rrregret it... Liam shook his head as if dislodging something from his ears. By now, his techs and assistants had gotten used to his odd quirks and let most of it slide under their radar. Clients, however, often noticed and were likely made uncomfortable.
"I don't see why not. Our other employees bring their animals. So long as she stays in the back and plays well with the others, that'll be fine. Otherwise we'd have to keep her in a cage all day."
Liam pet the cat and went to pick her up. "No no, it's fine having her at home. I just want you to keep an eye on her when you can. Make sure she's not coming home with any scratches or pests in her fur."
His lips twisted into a tired smile. "Come back tomorrow. We can start your training then," he said, handing the cat over. He was putting his trust in her that she'd return, he knew, but it wasn't like he could chain her to the clinic until her debt was paid. This wasn't an old timey prison.
